Human Factors Engineering (HFE)
Human Factors Engineering (HFE) are activities such as
function & task analysis, workload analysis, human error modelling, system ergonomics, human machine interface design,
usability testing, and
workspace layout that contribute to an efficient, effective, usable and safe product,
system or environment.
 |
Key Benefits of HFE
- Carrying out a task
analysis has many benefits including gaining a rich understanding of how a
set of tasks interact, where bottlenecks or human error potential are
likely, how long a process will take etc. A properly prepared task
analysis can provide a vital whole system overview which will assist many
aspects of the design process, and is of use to the whole design team.
- Conducting a workload analysis and human
error analysis will demonstrate the projected or actual ability of people to
conduct their tasks to the required performance and without error.
- People interact with objects all the time,
from a kettle, to a cash dispenser, to a computer programme. HF analysis
and design of objects and systems will ensure that they are optimised for the
physical and cognitive capabilities and needs of the target users.
- As humans we exist at all times within an
environment. Our performance (musical, theatrical, procedural, creative,
or otherwise) has been found to be linked to the functional layout and our
sensory reaction to the environment. HF analysis of workspace layout,
lighting, noise & acoustics, ventilation & heating and colour use can provide
the opportunity to significantly enhance human performance.

Capabilities
We have carried out a wide variety of
Human Factors Engineering
tasks in many situations and for a diverse set of clients in the defence,
emergency services and
transport sectors, on projects both large and complex. We have also
conducted specific assignments for smaller
organisations who require short term HFE advice on their products, services or
organisations. Please contact us for full details of our extensive HFE
experience and capability.
